My next assignment is completed and is over at my writings blog - be forewarned: It is lengthy. Really lengthy. We were assigned to create a descriptive essay, 3-5 pages (or more, if you'd like) on a topic of our choice and I chose "Where I Spend My Leisure Time." I know the title isn't all that *grabby* but I had no choice in that one...
One thing I can say about this course and I hope my brother D is reading this -- you were absolutely correct: Reading secular writing is not necessarily a "bad" thing - you suggested it and now I know why. An amazing world has been opened up to me, and I apologize if I show my ignorance, but the essays and short stories I have been reading have been transforming.
If anyone is interested, may I suggest:
A Walker in the City, by Alfred Kazin (actually only read an excerpt entitled "My Neighborhood," but I thoroughly enjoyed it!)
A Winter's Tale, Rick Bass (let me know if you have issues with this link as I have a subscription)
Struck by Lightning, Gretel Ehrlich
Salvation, Langston Hughes (hard to find a good link that isn't connected to free term papers or other such stealing...)
The other essays and shorts I am coming up lame on the links so I'll stop here and go make dinner :)
