the saintly smack-down quote for the moment:

LUIGI RIST, American (1889-1959), "Scallions"

i change up my sidebar on occasions with new pics and quotes from my favorite saints (canonized and otherwise) and thought i'd start here with a quote from a saint that either (a) is so poignant, you have to sit back and go "ahhh....that was amazing" or (b) totally kicks your arse unexpectedly and kicks it for reasons your ego won't let you post in an open forum.

to start us off, i present to you st. frances de sales:

"It is the mark of a mean, vulgar and ignoble spirit to dwell on the thought of food before meal times or worse to dwell on it afterwards, to discuss it and wallow in the remembered pleasures of every mouthful. Those whose minds dwell before dinner on the spit, and after on the dishes, are fit only to be scullions."

i believe that would be filed under "verbal smackdown" to someone who enjoys food and talking about it. does it mean i must now forego my weight watchers meetings??

isn't *scullion* closely related to *scallion* and, therefore, st. frank is talking about food within his comment about talking about food?
