Not a good way to be.
I was reading from my new book New Seeds of Contemplation (Merton) this morning prior to Mass. God knows I've quoted from it enough, but never had my own copy until I picked it up at Border's yesterday. First couple of chapters, man, you either need to be in total silence and exceedingly focused because I, uhhhm, issues in getting through it. I am happy I persevered, however, and wanted to share this for today, with regard to work: ...
To do the work carefully and well, with love and respect for hte nature of my task and with due attention to its purpose, is to unite myself to God's will in my work.I liked that. I have always thought what I was doing was to the glory of God. At least tried to think that way. Until I read this:
Unnatural, frantic, anxious work, work done under pressure of greed or fear or any other inordinate passion, cannot properly speaking be dedicated to God, because God never wills such work directly.**ouch**
He may permit that through no fault of our own we may have to work madly and distractedly, due to our sins, and the sins of the society in which we live.**okay, I am getting it now... **
In that case we must tolerate it and make the best of what we cannot avoid. But let us not be blind to the distinction between the sound, healthy work and unnatural toil. (emphasis added)Okay. Enough already. I am off to tolerate.
~peace~
