my husband wanted to surprise me and take me to philadelphia yesterday to attend the Home Show at the convention center. pretty cool idea, his decision to be spontaneous, but furthering that thought, we decided to take the train, then connect with the high speed line straight to 8th & market and walk a couple of blocks -- in the bitter cold, what were we thinking? -- to the convention center.
look out, we were being so spontaneous!! we were psyched!! we could both read on the train (scratch that. he could sleep while i read...)
we made our connection with the speedline (timing is everything) and when we got into philadelphia, we quickly realized that the hat/scarf/glove idea would have been a good one because the wind chill was like negative a-bazillion. we walked thru Chinatown and arrived at the convention center with high hopes around noon, only to find out that the show didn't start until 4:00 p.m.
4:00 p.m.
we were crestfallen. our spontaneity was being squeezed out of us like air from a balloon. we headed over to the Reading Terminal Market for lunch, walked around town a bit and decided to head back home after a couple of hours because any of the other places we would have gone were too far for walking distance, it was too flippin' cold out, and we were both starting to wear out.
got to the high speed line and back to where our train connected, only to discover we were an hour and ten minutes early. (do you know how cold it is on the train platform when the wind is whipping around?) jimbo spots a burger king that looked like it was a million miles away and we trudged thru the endless parking lot, against the wind and wimpering only ever so slightly, to get to the warm and now somehow inviting BK for something to drink prior to heading back to the depot, really ready (by then) to go home. we were home by 5:00 p.m. long day of doing virtually nothing (very seinfeld moments...)
when all was said and done, we actually had a good time, just hanging out :)
note to self: for the flower show in march, we will plan our spontaneity and first and foremost, find out what the starting time is.

Spontaneity is a wonderful thing!! And is often half (or more than half) the fun!! I would suggest that your lack of planning (and the resulting "adventure") was ALSO fun (in retrospect, of course)!! For the flower show, OR for your next fast food adventure, just step out there into the unknown & see what comes around that next corner! Of note - I was grinning, from ear to ear, reading all about "Penni's big city trip"!! :) "Hanging out", even in the midst of artic temperatures, is just letting go, just "be-ing". Maybe, after all, just what you needed. More of God's grace? Just coming via an unexpected avenue? Maybe so...only can only hope!! (((hugs))) :)
Too bad it was so cold out! That can put a damper onto any and all exploring! But I am glad that you got to spend time together- that's important these days...
Love you, Pen...
