part i: plug for a friend
my friend jules, also known as "heyjules," has taken up photography. how could she not? i have seen many of the pictures she had found in her attic that her father had taken and he was an amazing artist...the apple does not fall far from the tree. her images are quiet and unassuming, but are full of depth and insight (save for her recent hot chocolate post, which is nothing but a ploy from the devil to get me off-track of my eating plan...;)
i had mentioned in a previous post my love of a blog i happened upon called "art knowledge." for someone like me, it is a feast for my eyes, as well as educational as i am learning of art and artists i had never been aware of before. this picture reminded me of something jules would photograph, so i thought i'd post this picture entitled "Junior Prom" by Angela West because i loved it and know jules will, too.
part ii: share something about yourself that is little known regarding your creativity in my comments box...
are there hidden talents from my other bloggie friends that anyone would like to share? i know you are all amazing writers, but what else do you enjoy -- something else artistic cannot be far off.
to share a wee bit more from myself, i also take photographs (not nearly as good as the company i keep), i also quilt, knit, and crochet and have had a stitchery business in the past called "penni's, from Heaven - an inspired needle arts co." before we had a restaurant. i used to quilt on commission and make scriptural pillows and wall hangings. maybe i'll post a picture or two of my stuff -- it is copyrighted at the Library of Congress. what do you think about that??
tell me what you do, give me links to your things if you have them or links to other artsy-type places...share, share -- help me keep my mind off of all things medical, if you will...

I crochet and make rosaries. Eventually I plan to put the rosaries on the web, but I don't have a page of pictures yet.
I have an actual craft type room at home, but I rarely have time to indulge in it. I generally crochet things at long speech tournaments. (I'm a high school speech teacher)
I drink a lot of wine and then review it in a fun creative way as to get the point acrost without being boring and tedious.
I also catch butterflies in the springtime and do the same thing.
Heart you tons, Penni and miss you dearly.
I like taking photos too. These holidays I have spent some time 'playing around' with my new digital camera in the local cathedral. (I have put just a few of the photos here: http://kiwinomadphotos.blogspot.com/2007/01/st-pats-palmerston-north.html
and might get around to putting some more up later!
I used to play the flute, but don't have time to practise currently.
I would never have the patience to be a quilter. But I work with people who do and their work always amazes me. There is going to be a huge exhibition of quilts here in town in another week and I am really looking forward to seeing it.
Aren't you just the sweetest sistah? And I apologize for the whole hot chocolate/whipped cream fiasco. I blame the devil on that one as well, truth be told. ;-)
Besides writing and photography I love to garden (both indoors and out) and have a soft spot for caring for animals that has only grown from childhood.
One last thing...aren't ya glad I didn't post the picture of the banana nut bread I made last night? I thought about putting a slice of it right next to that cup of hot cocoa but even I knew that was going to push someone over the edge. hee hee heee
I write icons, and have just finished my eighth one of The Good Shepherd. I love to garden and cook, as well. These are the things that "fluff" out life a little, for me!
Penni, I have always wanted to see your "stuff". I am also curious as to why you do not do it anymore.
I was a quilter once a long time ago and have lately been thinking about getting back into it.
Feel like I'm coming out of the closet or tooting my own horn, Pen, but here goes. I write a series called Still Waters on contemplative prayer for mini retreats for adults through the Center for Children and Theology (cctheo.org).
i.
love.
these.
answers!!!
annabel, need to see a pic of your rosaries (i make those to, but this is about you, not me!!)
neil, you are a sassy reviewer, readers beware! he is one of the loves of my life, so i always encourage folks to visit, even if they have to go to confession afterward...
kiwi, post some pics on your blog, i'll be by soon :)
(((jules)))
renee, you are an amazing icon writer, anyone who hasn't seen your beautiful art will be in for a treat :)
annie, i'll post pics some day, but guys, you need to see what annie creates - i have an amazing journal of hers that i cherish and you would too, if you bought one from her ;)
true, i would love to read your series - do you have a link?
these are great, keep them coming!!
Well..... I create blog templates for myself... until I quit... last night... at least until the next time. tee hee...
I crochet, cross-stitch and paint a bit.
Nothing is really going on right now though, of those things.
Photography has always interested me too..
God bless, Pen. Keeping you and your Mom and family in our nightly rosary.
I spent the 1990s drawing political cartoons that appeared in 35 community newspapers in the Chicago suburbs. A few were syndicated nationally and one was chosen for the cover of a retrospective book for the year 1995.
I still draw caricatures by request.
i JUST made a post about my DIY attitude. i posted pictures of my most recent project (a bookcase). i also design cards, sew clothes, and am pursuing photography! (i'm still saving to replace my two cameras that got stolen a couple of years ago.)
oh i forgot to mention that i also really love messing around with web design and basic graphic art. i of course designed my blog but also worked on happy catholic's (not my best, but i tried) and phatcatholic's (phatcatholic apologetics) and a couple of others.
oh and this was my latest work: http://remnantca.wordpress.com/ though i admit i didn't have to do much.
then there's baking and cooking and...
basically my favorite activities (obviously) involve creating things from scratch.
photography would probably be the one thing i wouldn't ever give up, though.
that was a longer answer than you wanted, huh? sorry.
i love these long responses, miss laura, actually - i never have very interactive questions, usually just angst so this is good and cheaper than therapy :)
james, you think you know someone!! your photographs are amazing and now i have seen a whole other side!! very cool!
mamagiglio - why did you delete sister? are you too talented and didn't want the word to get out?
alexa, you are done now, until next time... :)
Oh Penni, I wanted to share the site I go to for all of my crafty project tips and reviews.
http://http://twopeasinabucket.kaboose.com/default.asp
Anyone interested in photography, scrapping, card making, mini-books, and a bigillion-other-things-I-would-never-think-of-but-that-are-on-this-site would love this place.
I've learned so much there. It's a real addiction sometimes!
Pen, I deleted because my reply was l-a-m-e! I wrote that I like to cross-stich( but have no time for it now-maybe when the kids grow up and move out in 20 years!) and take pictures. I also used to write poetry, but I'm not as angsty as I used to be. But I really love to sing and I'm good at it, but don't write songs (does that count as creative?).
Love ya,
Amy
I don't have a blog that is up and running, yet - one day when I find some volunteering committments at an end! I hope you don't mind my adding in here!
I am also into photography, cross stitching, writing, playing the piano, singing, cooking, and learning. If I had huge chunks of time, I would want to be in a community theater - I'm shy by nature, but love to ham it up!
I weave baskets. Not underwater basket weaving mind you, just simple basketry. :)
I crochet, cross stitch, dabble in water colour painting and write. I do love to take care of my flowers in the summer. Making my home an inviting sanctuary gives me a lot of pleasure too.
Still keeping you and yours in my prayers sister.
underwater basket weaving (smile)
Haven't thought of that since I was in college...
Hmm. Creative? I always beat myself up that I have writer-type talent, but I lack self-discipline, and persistance. I am perhaps destined to a life of low-productivity slackerdom. :-)
I write bad love poems, I play guitar badly, and I write the first ten chapters of novels.
