The early goers populate the pews,
say disparate prayers in separate rows
before the music of the Mass begins.
The silent servers bow as they prepare
the alter for the coming of the priest.
The ushers pace the vestibule in want
of questions or a piece of news to share
with others or the pastor when he comes.
Perhaps each person loves a part of Church
beyond the service of forgiving sins
and praising God with music, wine and bread.
The Communion of Saints or membership
in something fine and larger than yourself.
For me, it is the silence of this hall,
and the sense of the presence of the Lord.
