on a spur-of-the-moment decision, we went out to dinner last night with molly and her friend gracie.
molly said, "oh, that makes me sad," when she saw an elderly lady across the restaurant from us, dining alone. i looked over and said "why don't we invite her to join us?" but the response was "no," because she was already pretty well into her entree.
it got awfully quiet around the table at that point. after a few minutes, i mentioned the quiet and asked if it was because we didn't at least offer to have her dine with us? resounding no.
but i think it was.
what prevented us from reaching out? after all, she had looked perfectly content, drinking her hot tea and eating her burger. what could she have said? no? that would have been fine. what if she said yes? what would we have gained?
too much to try to describe.
next time, Lord. please let there be a next time.
