one for the book(s)

busy day at the restaurant today. busy all week, really.

today, however, i had just finished putting up scrambled eggs & homefries in the window, the half-sandwich to go with the soup was already up. i looked up and by the coke machine was the customer who the food was intended for, standing there looking at me.

"are those my eggs?"

"yes...yes, they are - hold on one second." i come from behind the line, through the swinging doors and over to the other side of the window. she is now outstretching her hands to take her food and deliver to herself at her table with her guest.

"give them to me."

"that's okay, i am on my way over..."

"i haven't eaten all day, i'm starving. i'll take them now."

i was incredulous. i looked at her, without blinking and said "PLEASE GO SIT DOWN."

she looked startled. i stepped back and put the food back in the window and said "kevin, please deliver this." fyi: he was waiting for the toast to pop up that went with the eggs. i told him to take the food out and deliver the toast 30 seconds later when it popped up.

for the record: i have never. ever. asked a server to give me my food from behind the counter so i can take it to my table.

never.

ever.

i don't believe she will again, either.

(what are people thinking in life? could someone please tell me?)
