when to make the sign of the Cross

this may actually be a good teaching for those who would like to know or a refresher for those who may have forgotten: when is it best to make the sign of the cross?

we see athletes do it before they step up to the plate/make a touchdown/score the winning goal/insert favorite sports memory here.....we cross ourselves when we say grace before meals and during prayer time. when i am at a church service elsewhere that is not Catholic, i still cross myself - it is just what i do, even though my husband says i don't have to, i do so anyway. it is part of who i am.

when at Mass, however, when do you cross yourself? my thoughts: after i dip my hand into the holy water when entering the church, remembering my baptism, i make the sign of the cross.

i do not when i genuflect before the Tabernacle prior to entering the pew - should this change?

after prayers ending "in the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit," i do.

at the Sacrifice of the Mass at the Epiklesis, i do (yeah, me and all the nuns, tyvm.....)

after receiving Holy Communion, i do not. i was told by our priest it is redundant to do so because Jesus is closer to us at that moment than when we recall Him by crossing ourselves.

please, apologetics officianados -- correct me if i am wrong, attagirls if i am right, elaborate if you wish. this could become RCIA material.

thanks.
