note to self: when yellow envelope comes from electric company, pay attention. if the subsequent envelope is blue, you had better open it because the next note you will get will be taped to your door, proclaiming the non-existence of electrical energy flowing into your home.

and you may be without it for 8 hours or more, and that would not be a good thing, especially if unexpected.

there are so many days that i wish for utter silence, i yearn for a peaceable solitude wherein the only sound i hear is the turning of a page of the book i am in the throes of or the soft clicking of my knitting needles as the blanket i am creating is growing in length; days where nothing is turned on because i desire it to be so. phone calls would be intermittent, unless i have turned the ringer off as i continue to bask in the quiet.

today was so not one of those days.

i had so much to accomplish and having my electricity shut off for non-payment (i swear, i was going today after mass, you can ask my friend margie!) totally threw my entire day out of whack. after several phone calls and multiple reassurances from the kind customer service folk, it was not turned on until after 6:00 p.m. bask in the quiet? sha.

fretted. all day. wondered what my friends were up to, felt totally and utterly disconnected from everyone and everything. i did knit, however, and read and finished a bunch of crosswords and questioned God about the reason behind my procrastinating ways and looked for the message in all of it (i got the message, alright!)

just when i had resigned myself to the fact that the sun was going down and i had best get some candles out, stoking the woodstove and thinking "i always wanted to do without electricity as they did *back in the day*," further thinking "i can do this...." and actually feeling my heart lift, my dog herbie started barking wildly as the truck from the electric company pulled up (oh sure herb - bark now. don't let me know when they are out there disconnecting wires).

*sigh*

maybe next time, i will give thanks immediately instead of as an 7.75 hour afterthought and the day will bode a bit better....either that, or i will actually pay my bill when the white envelope comes, the way normal people do :)
