when the levees broke

a requiem in four acts - a film by spike lee i watched on hbo last night. i think the next segment is on tonight...it was compelling, maddening. so very sad. i sat with tears in my eyes and such an ache in my heart for everyone in the bayou, once again.

what can we do? i raised money through my blog and we had a benefit last year for our friends chad & crystal, and while it felt nice to be proactive -- that was a year ago -- relief efforts are continuous, right?

can anything be done? anything else?
Only when we take human existence upon ourselves in its starkest and most humiliating misery -- a misery in which nothing has meaning -- can we win through to the only possible way to live. Only when we taste the lot of all, when we become involved deeply in world suffering, one in heart with the need of humanity, can we win through to our true vocation. Only when the conscience becomes active, only when love is born out of suffering, only when hardship leads to liberating action, is victory near.

~~ for further compelling writing and photojournalism, may i suggest a visit to operation eden. it is a very real (not very p.c. which is fine by me) and an honest look at the gulf coast and all that has been encountered and lived along the way over the past year ~~

~~further edited to add: please, even if you don't wish to comment, read the comments to this thread. thus far, they are from three friends who survived katrina and it is important to give them an ear. thanks.~~
